# Connect Claude, ChatGPT or another AI tool to Caleido

> Allow AI features for your organization, add the Caleido MCP server to Claude, ChatGPT or another AI tool, and ask questions about your figures with a read-only connection.

You can connect an AI tool such as Claude or ChatGPT to Caleido through the Caleido MCP server. The AI tool can then answer questions from your organization's figures: reports, KPIs, bank balances, transactions, and receivables and payables. The connection is read-only, so the AI tool can't change anything in Caleido.

## Before you start: allow AI features

AI features are off until someone in your organization allows them. One user turns them on for the whole organization.

1. Open **Settings** and select **AI**.
2. Under **AI features**, switch on **Allow AI features for this organization**.

The **Connect via MCP** section with the server URL appears in the same view once AI features are allowed.

## Connect your AI tool

**1. Copy the server URL**

In **Settings** > **AI**, copy the URL under **Connect via MCP**. You can also click **Connect MCP** in the top bar. The URL is `https://api.caleido.io/v1/mcp`.

**2. Add a custom connector**

In your AI tool, add a custom connector (MCP server) and paste the server URL as the connector's URL. Leave any client ID or secret fields empty.

**3. Sign in and allow access**

Your browser opens Caleido. Sign in with your Caleido account, choose the organization and click **Allow**.

## Or connect with one prompt

If you're not sure where your AI tool adds connectors, let the AI tool guide you.

1. Open a new chat in the AI tool you want to connect.
2. Copy the prompt below and paste it into the chat.
3. Follow the AI tool's instructions. When your browser opens Caleido, sign in, choose the organization and click **Allow**.

```text Prompt to copy theme={null}
I want to connect you to Caleido, our financial planning and reporting software, through its MCP server. Please guide me step by step.
Connection details:
- MCP server URL: https://api.caleido.io/v1/mcp
- Sign-in: OAuth in the browser with my Caleido account. There is no API key.
- Access: read-only. The connection can't change anything in Caleido.
Please do this:
1. Tell me exactly where in this app I add a custom connector or MCP server, using the menu names of the app I'm using right now. If you're not sure of the current menu names, say so and point me to the app's own help page instead of guessing.
2. Tell me to paste the server URL above and to leave any client ID or secret fields empty.
3. Explain that my browser will open a Caleido page called "Connect ... to Caleido", where I sign in, choose the organization and click Allow.
4. When I say I'm done, call the get_organization_context tool and tell me the organization name, the accounting currency and how fresh the data is, so we know the connection works.
5. Then suggest three questions I could ask about my figures.
When you answer questions about my Caleido data later:
- Call get_organization_context first in each conversation, and use find_entities to turn names I mention into ids.
- Always say which period, budget and organization a figure is from.
- Don't guess figures. If a tool returns nothing or an error, tell me.
```

## What happens when you connect

When the AI tool starts the connection, your browser opens the **Connect … to Caleido** page.

* Sign in to Caleido if you aren't signed in already. If the page shows someone else's account, click **Not you?**
* Under **Organization**, choose the organization the AI tool may read. It only sees data from that organization. To connect another organization, add the connection again
* Click **Allow** to connect, or **Deny** to cancel. You're then sent back to the AI tool

The AI tool has the same access rights as your Caleido user in that organization. Hidden dimensions stay hidden and anonymized organizations stay anonymized.

## What the AI tool can read

| Area | What the AI tool can do |
| - | - |
| Organization | Check today's date, the accounting currency, how fresh the data is and which budgets exist |
| Reports | Read your report templates, such as the income statement, balance sheet and cash flow, for actuals and budgets |
| KPIs | Calculate metrics from the metric library, such as equity ratio, EBITDA margin or DSO, for any period. The values match the figures in your reports |
| Bank balances | Read bank account balances on a date, and opening balance, inflows, outflows and closing balance per account and period |
| Transactions | List the transaction lines behind a figure, filtered by period, account, counterparty or dimension |
| Receivables and payables | See open and paid sales and purchase invoices, what is overdue and what falls due when |
| Search | Find accounts, counterparties, dimension items, budgets and templates by name |

## Example questions

* How did revenue develop compared with the budget this year?
* What was our EBITDA margin per quarter last year?
* How much cash do we have, and how did it change last quarter?
* Which customers have the most overdue receivables?
* Why did external services grow last quarter? Show the largest transactions.

## Disconnect

Remove the Caleido connector in your AI tool's settings. The AI tool can no longer read your data.

## Troubleshooting

| Message or problem | What to do |
| - | - |
| **None of your organizations can be connected yet** | AI features aren't allowed for your organization. Turn on **Allow AI features for this organization** in **Settings** > **AI** |
| **Connect via MCP** doesn't show in **Settings** > **AI** | Allow AI features first. The section appears once they are on |
| **This connection request isn't valid** | Start connecting again from the AI tool |
| The AI tool doesn't find a place to add a connector | Some AI tools allow custom connectors only on certain plans or with an admin's approval. Check the AI tool's own help |
| Answers are slow or stop | The connection handles a limited number of requests at a time. Ask one question at a time and try again after a moment |
