# Create a budget from actuals

> Use the Budgeting wizard to turn actuals from a past period into budget items for a future period, with a growth rule, rounding and a preview before anything is saved.

The **Budgeting wizard** builds budget items from your actuals. You pick a source period, a target period and a growth rule, check the preview and create the budget items in one go. It works for the whole report, a few rows or a single row.

## Choose what to budget

What you select on the report before opening the wizard decides which rows are included:

* **A range of cells**: the rows inside the selection
* **Selected rows**: the selected rows (use the row number column to select them)
* **Nothing selected**: every row on the report that can be budgeted
* **Right-click on one cell**: that single row, over the whole period. The wizard title then shows that it covers only this row

Transaction rows, cumulative rows (running balances) and new, unsaved budget items are left out automatically.

## Open the wizard

**1. Select the rows**

Select a cell range or rows on the report, or leave the selection empty to budget the whole report.

**2. Open the Budgeting wizard**

Click **Actions**, then **Data** > **Budgeting wizard…**. You can also right-click an actuals or budget cell and choose **Budgeting wizard…**.

## Set the source and target

1. On the **Source** tab, set the **Source period**: the actuals the budget is based on. The default is the period of the actuals columns on the report.
2. Choose the **Sampling cadence**: **Weekly**, **Monthly**, **Quarterly**, **Half-yearly** or **Yearly**. This is the period length the wizard calculates in.
3. On the **Target** tab, set the **Target period**: the period you are budgeting. The default is the period of the budget columns on the report.
4. Choose the **Target budget** the budget items are created in.

> [!NOTE]
>
> **Override** is set to **Don't override**: the wizard adds new budget items and never changes existing ones.

## Choose rows and level of detail

On the **Rows** tab you see every row the wizard will budget.

* Clear the checkbox next to a **Category** to leave it out
* **Budget item type** shows the type the new budget items get
* **Breakdown level** sets how detailed the budget items are. **Root** creates budget items at the level of the row itself. A deeper level creates separate budget items for each sub-row, in proportion to their actuals

## Set the growth rule

On the **Growth** tab you choose how the budget is calculated from the actuals, row by row.

Under **Uniform** (one value for the whole period):

* **Growth rate %**: actuals × (1 + value %). 10 means 10 % more than actuals
* **Percent of actual**: actuals × value %. 90 means 90 % of actuals
* **Nominal change**: adds a fixed amount to the actuals, spread evenly over the periods
* **Auto-seasonality**: grows the total by the value % and spreads it by the seasonal pattern of the actuals

Under **Per period** (you enter a value for each period on the **Preview** tab):

* **Seasonality (% change)**
* **Seasonality (% of actual)**
* **Seasonality (nominal change)**

Enter the **Value** for each row and pick **Round amounts to** (1, 10, 100, 1,000 or 10,000). Tick **Uniform growth type** or **Uniform rounding** to apply the first row's setting to every row.

## Check the preview and create

1. Open the **Preview** tab. It shows the budget next to the actuals for each period.
   * Turn **ACT** and **BUD** on or off to show or hide actuals and budget columns
   * Use **Show change on Act** or **Show change on Bud** to choose where the change is shown
   * Type over a budget value to adjust it. Click **Revert to computed value** to undo your change
2. Open the **Summary** tab to see every budget item that will be created, with its period, amount, item type, counterparty, account and dimension items.
3. Click **Create budget**.

Caleido creates the budget items and shows how many were created. To start over, click **Reset to defaults**. Your periods and preview edits are kept.

> [!WARNING]
>
> If the target budget is locked, the budget items are not created. Unlock the budget first. See [Manage budgets](https://support.caleido.io/guides/budgeting/manage-budgets.md).
