Global search finds any object in your organization from one box, so you don’t have to open each module to look for it. You type part of a name, number or description, pick what you need from the results and choose what to do with it. This page takes you through a first search and then explains everything the search can do.
1

Open the search

Click Search anything… in the top bar, or press Ctrl+K (Cmd+K on Mac) on any page where no dialog is open. The list opens below the box
2

Type what you are looking for

Type part of a name or number, for example a customer name, an invoice number or an account number. Results appear grouped by object type, such as Sales invoice, Transaction or Counterparty
3

Highlight a result

Move through the list with Arrow up and Arrow down, or point at a row with the mouse
4

Open it

Press Enter or click the row. The first Enter picks the object and highlights its default action. The second Enter runs it. For most objects the default action is Open, which takes you to the page where the object lives
Press Esc to close the list. Press Esc again to leave the search box.

What the list shows before you type

When the search box is empty, the list has up to four sections:
  • Favorites: rows you have pinned. See Pin favorites
  • Objects: every object type you can browse. Click one, or highlight it and press Arrow right, to list all objects of that type
  • Actions: commands such as Create a budget, Create a workbook or Create a tab, plus the commands in the Actions menu of the page you are on
  • Recent: the objects you opened from the search last
Click the Actions or Recent header to collapse or expand that section.

What you can find

Invoice rows, dimension items and bank transactions are found through their parent. See Browse into an object.

Matching ignores accents

The search ignores accents and special letters. Typing Karava also finds Kärävä Oy, and o matches ö and ø. The matching part of each name is highlighted in the list.

Pick an object and choose an action

When you pick an object, it appears as a chip in the search box. The Actions section then lists what you can do with that object type, with the default action highlighted first. Common actions are: Only the actions that work for the picked object type are listed. Press Ctrl+. (Cmd+. on Mac) to jump straight to the actions. To remove a chip, click the X on it, or press Backspace in an empty search box. Click Clear search (the X) to start over.

Pick several objects at once

Some actions work on several objects of the same type, for example Filter, Label, Delete or Open transactions. When the picked object type allows this, the list stays open after you pick a row, so you can pick more. Each picked row shows a check mark and gets its own chip. When you have picked everything you need, pick the action from Actions. You can also press Enter in the empty search box: the first Enter highlights the default action and the second runs it on all chips. The hint bar shows how many objects the action runs on.

Open in a window or a new tab

  • Shift+Enter opens the highlighted transaction or invoice in a window over the current page (Open in a modal)
  • Ctrl+Shift+Enter (Cmd+Shift+Enter on Mac) opens the highlighted object in a new browser tab (Open in a new tab)
The hint bar shows Modal and New tab only when the highlighted row can open that way.

Browse into an object

Some objects contain others. Highlight the parent and press Arrow right, or click Open related items on the row, to list its contents:
  • An invoice or an order lists its Invoice row entries
  • A transaction lists its Transaction line entries
  • A dimension lists its Dimension item entries
  • A budget lists its Budget item entries
  • A bank account or a credit card lists its Bank transaction entries
When you browse a list, you can type to filter it, change the sort order (Alphabetical, Date or Value) and choose which Columns the rows show. To go back, click the breadcrumb at the top of the list, or press Shift+Tab or Arrow left.

See everything about a counterparty

Browsing into a Counterparty shows every object that refers to it, grouped by type: transactions, transaction lines, sales and purchase invoices and orders, budget items, dimension items and labeling rules. When you pick a counterparty, the actions include Open transactions, Open transaction lines, Open sales invoices, Open purchase invoices and Open budget list view. You can pick several counterparties and open their data together.

Pin favorites

Point at a row and click its star (Add to favorites), or highlight it and press Ctrl+Shift+F (Cmd+Shift+F on Mac). The row is added to Favorites at the top of the list. You can pin objects, object types and actions. Pin the row again to remove it from Favorites.

Other things you can type

  • A calculation: type an expression such as 1250*1.255. The result appears after the text, and Enter copies it to the clipboard
  • An account range: pick the Account object type and type a range such as 3000-3999. Open account range opens those accounts in the general ledger
  • A name for something new: type a name and pick an action such as Create a budget or Create a workbook. The new object gets the name you typed

Keyboard hints

The bar at the bottom of the list shows the shortcuts that work right now. Shortcuts that don’t apply to the highlighted row are dimmed. Click Shortcuts, or press Ctrl+/ (Cmd+/ on Mac), to see the full list. The play button opens How-to videos. See all global search shortcuts in Keyboard shortcuts.
